.......... Promoting Just Neighbors

If you have been through the Just Neighbors program, you know how effective it is in helping people understand the problem of poverty, its causes, and its devastating effect on families.

Please help us bring Just Neighbors to the widest possible audience. Help to build the growing community of people who are using Just Neighbors to educate, motivate, and empower groups to make a difference for people in need.

Eight Things You Can Do

1.
Tell a Friend, Neighbor, or Relative About the Program

Tell about your experience with the program.  You'll be talking or writing to someone you know, so just be yourself.  You might describe what you learned, how the experience made you feel, or what you've decided to do about poverty.  If you feel comfortable doing so, suggest that your friend, neighbor, or relative sign up for a Just Neighbors session.  If the program is not currently being presented, urge the organization that sponsored your course to sponsor another.

2.
Inform the Local Press

Send a press release.  If a Just Neighbors presentation is coming up, send press releases to all the local media.  You can download a press release here.

Write a letter to the editor.  Describe your experience with the program.  Be personal, but remember that you are addressing a larger audience than friends, neighbors, or relatives.  You might mention the goals of the program and explain why you think others should attend a Just Neighbors presentation.  Be sure to tell people where the next presentation will be held, if one is coming up.  Direct them to the Just Neighbors website (www.justneighbors.net) for more information.

Write an op-ed piece. You may want to turn what you learned from the Just Neighbors program into an essay about the curriculum and its power to turn people's good intentions into action.

3.
Discuss the Program with Educators

Contact local educators and make appointments to discuss the Just Neighbors program.  Consider schools, colleges, and universities, both public and private.  For your discussion, equip yourself with the Just Neighbors press release, flyer, and - if possible - with the ToolKit itself.

4.
Call Radio Talk Shows

Give your personal testimonial on behalf of the program. People find statistics hard to absorb when they are "just listening," but personal experiences are compelling. During the Just Neighbors program you have had the experience of walking in the shoes of people living in poverty. Your account of that experience can be very persuasive.

5.
Demonstrate the Program to Local Groups

Contact local groups and offer to present the Just Neighbors program, or a specific portion of it.  Consider
   congregations
   civic organizations
   service organizations
   clubs
   unions

6.
Put an Ad on Your Website

Contact Family Promise about promoting the program on your website. We can supply you with banner ads. For information, e-mail justneighbors@familypromise.org

7.
Run an Ad in Your Local Paper

Reach the people who can put the program to work with their groups. You can download a camera-ready print ad here

8.
Post or Distribute Flyers

Check with your place of business, place of worship, school, or other institution for permission.  Then download the one-page flyers and choose the one you prefer.
